WHAT IS FAMILY CONTACT AND WHY DOES IT MATTER?
Family Contact is when kids in foster care spend time with their family. The Anchorage Family Support Center offers free family contact, transportation, and support services to families in the foster care system; encourages family strengthening by providing family bonding activities such as child-led play, art, reading, and shared meals around a table; and provides support services and referrals to other programs.
Family Contact matters because it maintains family relationships, reduces trauma to kids in foster care, strengthens families and build resiliency, and increases reunification.
"Children who see their parents on a weekly basis are ten times more likely to be reunified with their parents than children who do not." Child Youth Services Review 2011
